My husband and I (both engineers) decided to drive Engineer’s Pass during our first road trip in Colorado. Little did we know there was a heap of snow waiting for us halfway and we ended up having to turn around and backtrack to our next stop Ouray!
Engineer's Pass is a 4WD road that combines spectacular views at its summit, interesting mining locations and some challenging sections for the driver. This trail, combined with Cinnamon Pass, constitutes the famous Alpine Loop. There are many mines and points of historical interest along the route. Most of the route is easy, but there are still a few narrow, steep places on the west side of the pass that will get your attention. The trail climbs to an elevation of 12,800 ft. Any 4x4 with moderate ground clearance and low-range gearing can do it.
